You Be the Photo Contest Judge/Part II: Birds

Hand Update

The left hand continues to improve every day. Both extension and flexion are at about 85%. The incisions healed perfectly. I got to thank Dr. Pouplolo yesterday and give him a goodbye hug. I thanked him and told him that I loved him but that I hoped that I never had to see him in his office again. He understood. He thought I was doing great and that the chance of re-infection was as close to zero as you can get (if I can say that without giving myself a kinehora).

Nice challenge, maestro! Judging against my ideal, not my actual shots…
    1. Short-eared Owl – great impact and engages the viewer with both eyes
    2. Hawk Owl – charming image much to love in that expression, shame about the branch across the tail
    3. Flamingo – particularly liked the colour and the detail of the feathers, albeit some of the foreground feathers are a little soft – as it were!
I liked colour and composition on the Tiger Heron very much but thought the head angle is a killer – I have plenty of grey heron shots of my own with OOF tip of the beak.
The GBH is well exposed and I like the under wing detail, but the OOF branches kill it for me and I think i would prefer a more open wingspan if I could get it.
The Osprey didn’t move me at all – strangely. Yes, I’d like it if it were mine, but the blacks seem a little blocked and the comp seems to draw attention to the OOF right wing.
I hope the idea wasn’t to be very brief!
    Best wishes, Gerald

    2. Great blue heron — crisp, clear image.
    3. Short-eared owl — now that’s a wow, to get it looking at the camera, and it’s pretty clear

Glad your hand is better also! Wonderful blog; I share it with a bunch of folks.

As someone who lives with chronic hand pain, I’m really happy to hear your surgery went so well.

    My picks:
    1. Hawk Owl (great expression, head angle, lighting, focus on eyes)
    2. Flamingo (good composition, use of color and light)
    3. Short-eared Owl (golden light, good focus on the eyes)

Honestly 1 and 2 are a tossup and 3 is only because I find it the best of the rest, but I don’t think it’s as strong.

  • Glad the hand continues to improve. Even though you went through more than you should have had to, I think, in the long run, you dodged a bullet; you were (obviously) right to react and have it looked at as quickly as you did.

    1. Short Eared Owl
    2. Flamingo
    3. Hawk Owl (with a bit of PP to get the branch out from over the bird’s tail)

  • Paul Smith
