The Streak Continues: 270
This blog was published at 4:00am, again from my Mom’s home on Long Island. I am heading to Nickerson for another busman’s holiday. I am on Long Island until this coming Thursday while visiting my elderly (gonna be 92 soon) Mom, my younger sister Arna, my younger daughter Alissa and her wonderful family, and doing some late summer bird photography. So far, the photography has been phenomenal. This post makes 270 in a row.
As always, I would appreciate your using the BIRDS AS ART B&H affiliate links for all of your major gear, video, and electronic purchases, using our Amazon logo-link for all of your household purchases, and visiting the BAA Online Store for your tripod, tripod head, LensCoat, miscellaneous, accessories, and eGuide purchases as well.
Delkin e-Film Pro Flash Cards
Two of my Delkin 64gb compact flash cards came out of an extended spin spin in my Mom’s washing machine yesterday and, as expected, having done the same thing before, continued to function perfectly. One was the older 64gb 700X UDMA CF card and the other was a 64gb 1000X UDMA CF card that I use when doing video.
I have used and depended on Delkin CF cards since digital day one; you can order yours here.
Your Help Is Needed
Sales for most of August, 2014 via our BIRDS AS ART B&H affiliate links have been microscopically abysmal at best. If you need to purchase some new camera gear, please remember to use either our B&H logo link below or one of the product-specific links in the blog or the Bulletins. All should feel free to write me via e-mail

Not sure a bout the colours Artie- As you know I reckon I,m colour blind. ! If I posted a pic like yours I bet there would be 10 reposts from helpful people curing my “colour cast “( Tongue in cheek !
Cheers
John!!!!
I reckon I can see yellow, salmon, orange, pale bue …..
Yellow, salmon, and orange for sure along with some pinks and magenta. Someone mentioned coral which sounds and looks great! Thanks for stopping by. artie
Let’s add some levity, you have taken to digging foxholes.
Into the sun – the bird is backlit. Beach is a steep coastal beach OR you are in a channel and the birds on a sand ridge. I had reds and oranges at dawn once when there was only a small gap under clouds at the horizon. There was dust in the atmosphere and the underside of the clouds lit up red and orange that was reflected in the water. It only lasted for minutes as the sun rose and went behind the clouds. Colors were amazing. I think you need mist to scatter the light to get these colours.
Why the 5D IIII? Under the photo it credits 5D III(the current version) Probablly typo but could be wishful anticipation of an October product anouncement of 5D IV.
Just a typo. Now fixed. Many tanks! a
Colors: blue, red, yellow.
You may have thought my answer to be crazy. However, I see yellow at the top mixing with the red in the middle to make orange, I see red mixing with the early early light of blue at the bottom to make magenta. Yes, you don’t see the actual color of blue because it is mixed with the red – hence the “purple” some people saw. It’s a little like a sunrise rainbow of colors. One color mixes into another. The primary colors of this scene are yellow, red and blue which in turn makes all of the other subtle colors. Sunrise still has a little bit of the night, which is blue, and usually shows in the sand.
Not crazy at all :). Many thanks. Judging color is extremely subjective….
Hey Artie. IMO this is the best image you have posted in a long, long time. Perfectly exposed and composed. Just fantastic. Looks like the skimmers were backlight by the rising sun just barely poking through the fog. No way you get these colors on a totally clear day. My guess on why it seems that you were at eye level is that your 840 effective millimeters reduced the apparent angle.
I would enter this sucker in BBC!
Thanks Aidan. Coming from you that emeans a lot :). artie
I understand the standing question now, were you in the water?
Last time I tried that I ruined a good pair of binoculars…
I think you’re right! It can be that!
OK…. How would being in the water put me close to eye level with the birds???
Low tide?
Histogram leaning to the right side or maybe not.
You always want highlights in the right-most histogram box without pegging against the axis. When that happens, an image is over-exposed. Here I over-exposed (+2 stops) to ensure a properly exposed image.
1. Colors : yellow, pink, red, coral, white and black
2. Seen light like this? : yes on early morning sunrises only
3. the situation : not sure I understand the question. Four skimmers “sleeping” standing up in a row, seen as such while photographer is standing up. The second one was turned more towards you because of the white seen of its chest.
4. Where was I? : Standing up or on your knees with the sun being at eleven o’clock in the yellow region or in the left upper corner of the picture. (that’s my guess.) Some clouds in the sky or early morning fog or mist. (another guess)
Pretty good. Let’s try this: How did it come to be that I was pretty much on the same level as the birds while standing at full height?
you say yourself : standing. I said «standing up or on your knees» or on your elbows. Maybe you were standing in a small hole…???
Standing at full height. Keep thinking and remember that I was at the beach…
Maybe you were standing up back to the water while they were up on some dunes? I don not know this site : I suppose it was taken at Nickerson beach?
Nice! Love a new look on a usual black/red/green/sandy scene!
I’ve been experimenting with warming up my white balance lately. Shooting in shade and cloudy mode. Really warms up the photos and makes for richer tones overall. I’m not implying thats what you did here, but reminded me of that.
Lovely shot, if I didnt have a 9-5 I would of been there with you!
Thanks for the kind words. I often go to a warmer color temperature in the pre-dawn and at dusk and on cloudy days and in the shade as well.
Why the 5D IIII?
Will cause all kinds of weird images.
Only with Art Vivid HDR. Straight up, as with the image here, it produces beautiful, accurate colors…
Red orange yellow
Yes, morning light when sailing, at sunrise, in hazy and hot conditions
Shooting with the rising sun at a 10 oclock amgle
No, I think you need a lot of humidity in the air
Beautiful scene reseved for the early risers…
M
Good stuff. And yes, only for the early risers.
4 Skimmers at Nickerson Beach overexposed shooting into the sunrise, on a diagonal line. Colors, over saturated a lot, pink, red, yellow, green, orange, dark gray and dark white, not pure white i.e. 255. Obviously at 5.6 a very shallow DOF. It was chilly yesterday so you might have had some fog yesterday morning on the beach. First skimmer in focus and the rest progressively out of focus.
Please explain what you mean by over-exposed. I rarely if ever want mu WHITEs anywhere near 255…
That’s amazing.
Red, Orange, Yellow, & a pinky purple.
Nope.
Were you shooting into the sun on a foggy morning?
I don’t know but I’d go with no, perhaps the fog absorbs a certain spectrum?
Good job on the fog and the “no.” artie
ps: glad that you liked it.
