The Streak Continues: 307
I have now received three of the four DPP 4.0 RAW Conversion Guide manuscripts from the reviewers via e-mail and will begin the fifth and final round of editing this weekend. I will ship the revised ms off to Arash so that he can create the PDF. After arising at 2:15am yesterday (6:05am today:)), a short nap at 9:00 set up the rest of a productive day. I enjoyed an easy 2/3 mile swim yesterday. This blog post, the 307th in a row, took me about 2 1/2 hours to prepare. It was published at about 7:40am from my home in Indian Lake Estates, FL.

Getting a 7D Mark II on Monday!
Thanks to Canon USA’s Len Musmeci, Steven Inglima, head of the Canon Explorers of Light program, and good friend and Outdoor Photographer‘s Tech Tips expert George Lepp. Len approved the loan, Steve arranged it, and George is sending me the 7D II that he has been working with by Fed-Ex today. I need to return the camera on Tuesday October 14. Canon folks who are signed up for the Fort DeSoto IPT will be getting a very good look at the new camera.
I will begin sharing 7D II images with you here soon with the following rejoinder: the images were created with a “Beta” camera, not with a final production model.
George Lepp’s Comments on the 7D II
George called BIRDS AS ART yesterday to order a copy of The Art of Flower Photography, the inspiring and instructive new eBook by Denise Ippolito and yours truly. Thinking that he was calling about shipping the 7D II I picked up the phone. He kept saying that he was paying and I kept telling him that he was not. I prevailed in the long run.
I asked George about the quality of the 7D II image files. He said, “You will love the camera and the image quality. The images are quite similar to those from the 5D Mark III.” Then I asked with some trepidation, “What about noise?” George replied, “The same as the 5D III.”
Wow, it is looking as if the 7D II might be a lightweight 1.6 crop factor body with 1D X AF and 5D III image quality and relatively low noise. I can’t wait!

#1: Denise climbed a small hill to create this image. WhY?
#2: Denise set the exposure so that there were a few blinkies on the snow and the brightest clouds. Why?

FEB 14-23: Red-crowned Crane, raptors in flight, Whooper Swans, and scenic photography. Ural Owl possible. Lodging notes: bring your long johns for sleeping in the lodge. In Rausu and the snow monkey park, the hotel the rooms are Japanese-style. You sleep on comfortable mats on the floor. Wi-fi is available every day of the trip.

For the answer to #2, I know that on my 7D at least, that the thumbnail the camera produces for the screen is a jpeg and that it will show blinkies before the raw file I am relying on is hitting 255, more like 225-235!

Agree with everyone else about why Denise climbed the hill. Can’t wait to hear what you think about the new 7D! George Lepp’s comments are encouraging indeed!
I’m with Joe. I’d like to see how it holds up to the IV. I’ve never, ever
bought a new camera body, but this one has me tempted. I’m just waiting
for that proof in the pudding. Call me overly cautious, but I don’t want
to pre order something then find out it doesn’t live up to the hype.

Yes, what Marvin Smith said about Denise’s climbing the hill. The other side of the same coin when you asked us about why you wished you could have got lower in photographing a pelican. You have taught me to pay much better attention to the background. I agree with the others about exposure: If no blinkies, the photographer, bare trees, and hillsides would have been very dark. Looking forward to your 7D2 report. There will be a lot of surprised people if the image quality is as good as the 5D3.
Good on #2: to bring up detail on my relatively dark coat and the forest.

Even with it being a beta camera I’m really going to be tuned in to see the results you get with the 7mkII. Lepp’s remarks are certainly encouraging. It would be great if you could run a comparison between it and the mkVI when your finished, kind of a shootout between the crop bodies.
I would say Denise climbed to separate you from the clutter and with snow it’s almost a given you need to push for the blinkies to keep away the gray cast. I’m assuming she was in Auto WB?

I will not be doing any 7D II/Mark IV comparisons as I do not own a 1D IV :).
I might do something that compares cropped images from either or both the 1D X/5D II with the 7D II. The key word being “might.”
Exposure values do not cause color casts. And there is no such thing as a grey color cast :). I know what you are trying to say, “have some blinkies on the snow and sky to avoid greying out the snow,” but though that is correct it is not the right answer to question #2.

While not as interesting or useful as a 1D IV, 1D X or 5D III comparison I could drop one of my original 7D bodies down your way early next week if you would have any use for doing a comparison with it.

I think Marv has it right.
Denise knew she could correctly return a few blinkies to good exposure in the conversion. By exposing far to the right and using a lowish ISO she would lessen noise. ???

1. She wanted to have the figure framed by the foreground snow.
2. She wanted to increase the contrast between the figure and the snow.
1–Had nothing to do with the foreground…. See my conversation with Marvin below.
