Desert Urbex: 5DS R In-Camera Art Vivid HDR Draws First Blood

What’s Up?

We are here on having fun. The internet is in and out but promises to be our most reliable of the trip…

Folks sending new inquiries and selling new gear are best advised to get in touch with me at the end of the month.

Don’t Look Now!

Today’s blog post marks 162 days in a row with a new educational blog post. As I will be making the trip to Namibia on April 11, this streak will likely come to an end soon. As always-–and folks have been doing a really great job recently–-please remember to use our B&H links for your major gear purchases. For best results use one of our many product-specific links; after clicking on one of those you can continue shopping with all subsequent purchases invisibly tracked to BAA. Your doing so is always greatly appreciated. Please remember: web orders only. Please remember that if you are shopping for items that we carry in the BAA Online Store (as noted in red at the close of this post below) we would appreciate your business.

This image was created on the first day of Denise Ippolito and my busman’s holiday at Kolmanskop Ghost Town, Namibia. I used the Induro GIT 304L tripod/Induro BHM1/-mounted Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens (at 18mm) and the mega mega-pixel Canon EOS 5DS R. ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop in-camera Art Vivid HDR +/- 1 stop around a base exposure of .6 sec at f/16.

Center AF point/AI Servo Expand/Rear Focus AF on the center of the right hand door frame and release/re-compose slightly. Click here to see the latest version of the Rear Focus Tutorial. Click on the image to see a larger version.

We were late on the scene lamenting the usual first morning of the trip blues tune. For the first 20 minutes I could not see an image as we muddled around through two buildings. I hated the zillion footprints in the sand and I am not a fan of the 20 stop range of some of the in the building through the window to sunlit desert scenes. When I found this room with no sand on the floor and not a window to the outside world in sight, I was off and running as my creative juices began to flow.

I did find myself wishing for the 100-400II for more than a few images. I am bringing it along with the 11-24mm on our afternoon photo session. You should be seeing some close-up detail oriented and/or abstract type images if I can get back online successfully again.

Please Remember to use our Affiliate Links 🙂

To show your appreciation for my continuing efforts here, we ask, as always, that you get in the habit of using my B&H affiliate links on the right side of the blog for all of your photo and electronics purchases. Please check the availability of all photographic accessories in the BIRDS AS ART Online Store, especially the Mongoose M3.6 tripod heads, Gitzo tripods, Wimberley heads and plates, LensCoats and accessories, and the like. We sell only what I have used, have tested, and can depend on. We will not sell you junk. We know what you need to make creating great images easy and fun. I would of course appreciate your using our B&H affiliate links for all of your major gear, video, and electronic purchases. For the photographic stuff mentioned in the paragraph above we, meaning BAA, would of course greatly appreciate your business. “I hated the zillion footprints in the sand”

Yes, sadly it’s so often the case, people ruin the beautiful place they came so far to photograph by leaving litter and trampling everything in sight.

Nice image, Artie. I especially like the blue sky reflected in the door windows (?) laying under the staircase. It’s the same blue as the lower walls of the entryway. And I agree with Jackie, beautiful (oak?) floor.

Nice depth, love the floor. The floor is the first thing that caught my eye, then the stairs and door laying on the floor after that I started checking out the walls. Like the filter effect! Sounds like your in good hands, Jackie

    Was this in the hospital?

    • Neil Caithness

Ron, I don’t think the hospital has a staircase going up to another level. Also the corridor in the hospital is much wider. I think this is the quartermaster’s house. Note the border pattern between the two colours on the wall – these were hand stenciled to simulate posh wallpaper and only found in the more up-market houses. I have pictures of one house that has the whole wall done. In the 70’s there was still a chap who came to Luderitz every few years to reapply the stencil, like the travelling piano tuner.

Actually, I do believe it could be, as I have pictures of the remains of one, but it is full of sand unlike this one and it is in the middle of the building. If you look closely at Art’s picture, you can see the remains of green paint in the corner, similar to some that I have from other rooms in the hospital, although, you are right, I don’t remember seeing any “stencils” in the hospital rooms or offices. Hopefully Art will tell us where he took this pic.

Not the hospital. Second house in from the left at the end I think… a

  • Is there a way to pull off the art vivid look thru Photoshop, or maybe one of the Nik Filters? I love the staircase and the diagonal lines behind the door.

Thanks Doug. Not really in Photoshop unless you are either really good or you are Denise. Some of the HDR programs could come close but again, you really would need to know what you are doing and/or experiment a lot… a
