What’s Up?
The 2nd Palouse group is great. I woke early; we head out to the vintage gas station at 6am. We let them sleep late since today, Friday June 10, is DAY 1 and many had long travel days yesterday.
Sony Alpha a7R II Mirrorless Digital Camera
After hearing so much about the great image quality, improved dynamic range, and high ISO noise performance, I borrowed a Sony Alpha a7R II Mirrorless Digital Camera and the T Smart Adapter Mark IV for Canon EF or Canon EF-S Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount cameras. With the Metabones adapter, I can use all of my Canon lenses with functioning AF and no vignetting, even on the wide angles. Pretty amazing.
Adobe Camera RAW Updating Help Needed…
Here is the problem: when I try to convert a Sony ARW file–perhaps they misspelled RAW :), Photoshop opens and the dialogue box says Photoshop cannot open this file. When I followed the link in the dialogue box I wound up in no-mans-land. With help from Patrick Sparkman and Denise Ippolito, I updated Adobe Creative Cloud and was surprised that when I attempted to convert a Sony RAW file that I got the same message. Apparently Adobe Camera RAW does not update when you update Creative Cloud… I searched the internet and found lots of promising links but no solution to the problem as all led nowhere…
I am on a Mac. If anyone can provide clear and simple instructions along with a link so that I can download the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW asap it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and later and love, artie
Update I: It Gets Even Worse…
I surfed my way here and clicked on the download for
this: DNGConverter_9_6.dmg. I successfully downloaded and installed it. When I attempt to convert a Sony ARW file, I still get em>Photoshop cannot open this file.
Did I download the wrong file? Or is it in the wrong place. Help!
Update II
It seems that even though I downloaded and “installed” DNGConverter_9_6.dmg and I see it in Finder, it did not wind up in the correct folder as when I click on Photoshop > About Plugin > Camera RAW it shows Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw v8.6.0.254.
So I guess the question is how do I get DNGConverter_9_6.dmg into the correct folder so that it replaces or over-writes Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw v8.6.0.254? I think…

Sony has a free version of Capture One for their raw conversion if that helps.
Thanks all. Problem solved. Details will follow. a
Hi Arne,
If using a Sony lens with IS both the lens IS and camera IS are used. If using a non Sony lens with IS the lens IS is used and the camera IS is disabled. If using any lens without IS the camera IS takes over if you have it turned on. Here is an in depth review of the camera that includes a description of the IS system: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-alpha-7r-ii However, they say that if a non Sony lens has IS you should turn it off and rely on the camera. That may have applied to their pre-production sample but it does not work that way. If a lens has IS it is used and the camera IS is disabled. Even if you turn the lens IS off and try to turn the camera IS on the camera gives a notice that the camera IS is not functional and if you want IS to turn the lens IS on. I hope this helps.

Hi Artie, I also use the Sony A7RII with Canon lenses on a Mac Pro using El Capitan 10.11.5. Do you have the latest operating system installed on your MacBook Pro?
I am able to open my raw files in camera raw and then open in Photoshop using CC but sometimes it acts strange and won’t see the card. Trying rebooting your Mac with the card hooked up. Also try opening Photoshop first then opening the raw file from Bridge with Photoshop already open.

The only thing I can think of is to get the Sony software that comes with the camera
comparable to Canon DPP4. If not, try to get a Plugin for Photoshop that will do it.

Hi Artie,
I used the A7RII and the a6300 on the Fort DeSoto IPT with the 200-400, 500II and 600II that you provided. The only difficulty that I had was that if the lens was way out of focus it took some time to acquire focus. What I did was to use manual focus to get the lens in the “ballpark” and it would then focus quickly and accurately. I was happy enough with the functionality that I bought a used 600II from the BAA site thanks to your referral. The detail from the A7RII and 600II is quite remarkable. Updating CC should solve your RAW conversion issue.
I’ll tell you what. I have been a Canon shooter all my life, but the Sony A6300 shows some real potential. Very clean images for an APS-C. I have heard it compared to the Canon 5D Mark III in image quality, which would be phenomenal for an APS-C camera. Sony is very slowly turning my head that direction. It will be hard for them to do it though.
Matt, more like the 7D II than the 5D III?
When all else fails, call Sony customer service.
did you try importing your sony images into LR as DNG’s or Raw instead of into PS/Adobe RAW? I don’t know why LR would read the sony files since your PS/RAW doesn’t but sometimes’s trying everything helps. If succesful, then after import you could send them to PS (edit-in).
Art, ACR, needs version 9.1.1 to open Sony aZ R II files. The latest update to the CC was only a few days ago, so if you folks haven’t implemented this one, they may have to do so. Updates should be accessible through the Help Menu in either Lightroom or Photoshop. Bridge is also updated in this down load.
The DNG converter, to my knowledge has not been updated since 2012 and so may not support any camera issued after then.
If you haven’t resolved it by the time this post is available, then ,my suggestion would be to phone the Adobe Help line.
Artie have you tried Lightroom or Infanview (Free)??
Infan FAQ: Q: Can I use IrfanView on Mac?
A: Yes, probably. There is no native-Mac version of IrfanView. However, you can use IrfanView in conjunction with Mac program like WineBottler/DARWINE. Take the ZIP version of IrfanView and unzip it or copy your existing Windows IrfanView folder to Mac. This is easier because the installer may need additional Windows DLLs to run.
I use Infanview on Windows. I can view my raw files before I go to Lightroom. Olympus(E-5) Raw file won’t open in Photoshop and the file acts like a jpeg when opening in LR. Infanview lets me view the large Raw file, I can go through my images getting rid of the unwanted then when I go to LR I import the files I want.
I tried using the html tags. I’m hope they work. Once I hit the post button there is not return.
Good Luck,
Jackie
I get an ERR 99 message on my 40D. It is intermittent but sometimes persist through several cycles of removing the battery and turning the camera on and off. Tried different lens and cards, no change.
There are several suggestions for cures on the net but none have worked for me.
Needs to get to a Canon repair center. It is old like my but with luck you can get it fixed… a
On your computer go to CC and make sure you are logged in. In CC click on Apps and your list of available apps with any updates should be listed. Conversion of Sony A7rII RAW files has been available in LR and CR for awhile.
I use the A7rII and Metabones T Mark IV adapter with my Canon lenses. It works great on the shorter focal length lenses. Autofocus on the longer lenses is less effective. This is what Metabones says, “Even on A7RII and A7II, long telephoto lenses hunt more often and autofocus performance progressively deteriorates as focal length gets longer.” I kept the 7DII to use on my 100-400 MKII.

Hi Artie
If creative cloud is installed on your mac clic on the CC logo in the very top bar you will see an Apps choice. If Photoshop isn’t up to date you will have a button to update Photoshop CC. You may have to log in to Creative cloud.
Hope that this helps
Did. Thanks Mike.

Try logging out and logging back in using the CC portal. It might be that you haven’t logged in the last 30 days so you are not getting access to the new update. And if you have troubles with the log in/out I have the troubleshoot to fix that issue as I had a problem with that not that long ago. 🙁 Good luck.
Hi,
The file you downloaded is for Adobe DNG creator which is different from Camera Raw.
You could try using this Camera Raw 9.6 installer program from Adobe. Link: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-in-installer.html
On my mac I updated Photoshop CC and the CameraRaw was automatically updated to 9.6 at the same time. Is you Photoshop CC up to date?
Hope this helps.
Hi Geoff,
#1: I updated CC and ACR did NOT update…
I was hopeful. I downloaded CR 9.6 for Mac and clicked on it until is showed “Installation Successful.” Same result.
Any clues?
a
Artie, or is it Dr. Morris is recently? 🙂
The Sony has IS in the camera while Canon has it in the lenses, right? How will this work together? Do I get the Sony IS, the Canon IS, no IS, or both at the same time? Thx!
/AK
Hi Arne,
Four folks on the 2nd IPT use the Sony Alpha a7R II; I am hoping to learn the answer to your question soon and lots more.
