Nikon D5 Help Needed
If you live in San Diego and know your way around the Nikon system, more specifically, the Nikon D5, and would like to help me out, I would love to hear from you. I’d be glad to trade a morning of photo instruction in La Jolla for a morning of Nikon instruction. I have borrowed a D5 and the Nikkor 200-500 from B&H to test. I am ready to go but have no clue as to how to work the camera 🙂
If you are interested, please shoot me an e-mail and include a good phone number.
If you do not live in San Diego but think that you could help me via phone, please shoot me an e-mail and include a good phone number.

This Just In!
I just spent an hour on the phone and FaceTime with IPT veteran and blog regular Krishna Prasad Kotti. He kindly and generously helped me set up the new Nikon camera. When I first picked it up I felt hopelessly overwhelmed. Right now I am confident that I can head out tomorrow morning and start making great images with the new rig. Huge thanks Krishna!
Arty,
On my IPad Mini Retina screen your images taken with Nikon gear are not as sharp as most of the work you have posted over the years.

Also, try the D500 with the 200-500. This i my go to combo
Disagree with Dennis Miller and agree with your assessment. I have the 200-500 and a D800E and get outstanding shots with it, especially in flight bird shots as it is very quick and accurate to focus and easy to handhold. It’s an exceptional lens considering it’s price. I have the 600 also. I think you will be impressed with it!
Hi Artie
Am I right in a assuming that you are no longer connected to Canon US ? or are you just
interested in the technical side of a new professional photographic system, you have got me
intrigued on this. A friend of mine is using Canon len’s hooked up to Panosonic body’s
and getting very excetable Images.
Best and love

Not sure the lens is up to the body in your test case. On the other hand, I have had great success with the D5 and top gear like the 600 f/4, 70-200 (my favorite combo) and more. But no doubt you will get the best that can be gotten from your setup. Looking forward to seeing your results.
Dennis
I’ve seen super high quality images made with the 2-5 and the D-850 so that would not jive with your assessment.

Artie, Steve Perry’s website is http://www.backcountrygallery.com. Check out the tutorials on the camera set up. Good luck with your muscle memory. I shot Nikon for years, switched to Canon and found the buttons and dials were doing different functions that I was accustomed. Switched back to Nikon and it was like going home. You will like the D5.
Artie, I would be delighted to help. I’m not on the West Coast, but know that camera/lens combination inside & out.
I’ve misplaced your phone number. Drop me a note & I can give you a call

Hi Artie,
Ditto Steve Perry. Also, I looked just today at a list of Moose Peterson’s menu settings for the D850. They are nearly exactly like the menus on my D500. They should be very similar to the D5. Happy shooting.

I look forward to hearing about your experience. Everything I read leads me to believe that the D850 is better than the 5D Mk IV.
I read Steve perry secrets to Nikon AF book. While I don’t have Nikon d5 I have d500 which has almost similar features. That book has in-depth info on AF setting etc.
Though I am not in San Diego, will be glad to be of any help.
Look at backcountry.com StevePerry has lots of good Nikon info on his site (much better than others …) I thought you would borrow a D850 but I guess they are still not in stock. Also look-at D5 book by Darrell Busch.
Best
John
Thanks John. I will check out StevePerry. I have an XQD card in the camera and two charged batteries and hope to be photographing with the 200-500 in the morning 🙂 You are right; I could not get a D850 …
What body are you using?
