Strange Times Indeed

What’s Up?

Shonagh and I enjoyed two excellent sessions at DeSoto on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. I am getting quite used to the SONY 600mm f/4 GM lens. Details soon. We met the rest of the group for two hours of learning and then did really well in two locations. Almost time to shower and sleep and run it back again …

Strange Times Indeed

It was strange indeed to drive out of my garage with all of my Nikon gear on the carpet rather than safely stowed in the back of my car … I started with Nikon in January 2018. Compared to my 35 years with Canon, it has been a short ride. After our first two sessions at Desoto, I am about 90% sure that I will be switching completely to SONY … Or not. Time will tell. If and when I do make the change I will, of course, share my reasons with you here.

My Nikon Gear …

From top to bottom and left to right: My larger Think Tank roller; Nikon 600mm f/4 VR, Gripped D850 and my favorite Nikon lens, the 500mm PF, Nikon 70-200mm f/4 VR lens, a D850 with the Nikon 24-120 VR lens, and the killer Sigma APO 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens for Nikon F. All will most likely be for sale soon …

I’m waiting for Ari Hazeghi to give me his opinion which I suspect will be based upon testing and comparisons. Some of the material I’ve seen regarding Sony is good but questionable and not objective enough. Time will tell. In the meantime I’m will not suffer too much if I miss a few shots using technologically less than the latest equipment available.

Arash has a thing against SONY. I am switching and will be selling all of my Nikon gear very soon. Reasons to follow.

  • Good morning Guru. Hope this message finds you in good health and cheerful as ever.

    Canon to Nikon . . .

    Nikon to Sony . . .

There aren’t many other good brands remaining out there! How about maintaining a cocktail of brands and models to suit various purposes?!

Apologies if I’ve offended you Guru. You have always been my Guru and will always remain so regardless of whether I follow your switches or not.

    Best regards.

Howdy Quazi, Thanks for commenting. You can never offend me; only I can offend me …

Right now working with two systems is a pain. Traveling with two systems is even worse. Right now I am very strongly leaning towards going all SONY … Time will tell.

  • Teacher, missed seeing a beautiful new bird picture and the storyline behind it. When you make a decision I’ll be interested in hearing your valuable insights, and the why’s and why not’s. Today’s tease blog for me (and I know you need to mix things up) was a missed learning opportunity. I’d rather see a picture of a common Sparrow and your key insights. Good Luck on your gear decision.

I’m waiting a year to see if canon has a response. Did the creative live thing on the a7riii and my eyes glazed over. Not that happy with eos rp either although my mistake may have been in not getting the R. I’ve been with canon since I left exacta for the FTb something like 50 years ago. If they would just fix their menu and hire an native English speaker to proof read……. I’m already having to hire tech help to set up my window 10 computer, hate to have to do that for my camera.

Besides being a great photographer, Artie is an astute businessman. Perhaps Sony approached him to form a relationship and he is testing their equipment to see if it meets his standards. I follow many photographers and Artie has the best business model I’ve seen. He has developed several individual profit centers as after all you gotta pay the bills. Continued good fortune Artie, I love seeing your photos.

Perhaps SONY does not give a rat’s ass who I am right now. I will have plenty of bad things to say about SONY in time. Not that being an Explorer of Light kept me from pointing out bad things about Canon. I even got in trouble with Japan a few times … I was not, however, let go for many, many years after that.

As far as making a living doing what I love, I have been doing fine in that area.

Before making your mind I suggest you waiting until the new Sony 9ii is available in the next month or so and any new tele lenses. As you know it is supposed to have a great new sensor (36 mg); faster; better color; better tracking and in the same body of the Sony you seem to like. The new Sony lenses have been designed to be able to track at the speed/frame rate of the new higher tracking/frame rate of this new Sony camera….maybe this is marketing bs…maybe real stuff. If true maybe real help for bif/sports photographers….maybe over kill.

    Hi Art,

Life is never boring? The innovations in technology have been truly astounding and when one compares the cameras and lenses today against those we had a few years ago or even back in the days of film, it is simply remarkable. Care to comment a bit more on the move away from Nikon?

    • Arthur Morris/BIRDS AS ART

Nope, never boring. And yes to the amazing new technology. As far as why, this from above:
