What’s Up?
The two big Canon RF super-telephoto lenses are now available for pre-order. If you know that you will be getting one, do not hesitate to pre-order now. They will be hard to get and the lists will be long. Folks living in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, California, and Pennsylvania may wish to order from B&H with their PayBoo cards so save the sales tax — see below for the B&H links. All others are advised to use Bedfords.

I have never been a fan of the 400 f/2.8 lenses for bird photography. Patrick Sparkman loved his. And Harry Lerner loves his. One thing is for sure: you cannot beat the background bokeh at f/2.8.

It will be interesting to see how many people purchase a 600 f/4 RF which is essentially the old 600 f/4 EF with an adapter on the back for RF. It’s not smaller, lighter, or less expensive and the EF lens offers more utility in that it can be used with either platform. Time and $ will tell.
Great point. I was curious as to why the RF 600 did not cost $18,000 …

Good morning Guru. Hope you’re doing fine.
Boss, I’m a fan of 2.8 prime telephoto lenses. Whenever necessary it should be used with 1.4x or 2x extenders. The latter works best with these lenses. After learning from you, I always use my EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM with a 2x III extender and always get great results for wildlife photography. I’ve even used it with APS-C bodies and still results are great. I’m sure story will be the same with 400mm f/2.8 as well with longer reach.
Whenever someone buys a f/2.8 super telephote lens; in fact he buys three lenses. First the bare lens, second with 1.4x third with 2x. And the combos work flawlessly with all bodies retaining AF. I’m sure things will be more fun with MILCs.
So, I retain my 2.8 tele lens for so long as I live. Subsequently, hope my son will also be able to use it.
Best regards.
Thsnk you Guru for your awesome posts as we keep learning.
Sanjeed, You are misquoting me 🙂 I am specifically against the 400mm f/2.8 lenses as ones price lens for bird photography. I have nothing against f/2.8 lenses like the 70-200s or the 300mm f/2.8s. I wish that SONY made one of the latter.

Guru, perhaps I didn’t misquote you. This is what I said:
After learning from you, I always use my EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM with a 2x III extender and always get great results for wildlife photography.
Best regards.
After I wrote, I have never been a fan of the 400 f/2.8 lenses for bird photography, you commented: Boss, I’m a fan of 2.8 prime telephoto lenses. …………. I’m sure story will be the same with 400mm f/2.8 as well with longer reach.
So you are correct: you did not misquote me, you simply disagreed with me. And that is fine.

Should NY residents also order from B&H via Payboo?
Hi Eric, I was in error above. If I lived in New York, I would order from Bedfords to save 3% and get free second-day air Fed-Ex while using my regular credit card and earning air miles. No tax on purchases from Bedfords with your regular credit card or from B&H with a Payboo card. See lots more in Friday’s blog post.

You may wish to add NJ as a state in which PayBoo covers sales tax.
You are correct sir. See lots more on sales tax in Friday’s blog post.
