Lying Down (backwards) on the Job. And Moving a Large Bush in Photoshop with a Quick Mask ...

What’s Up?

On Wednesday morning it dawned still and cloudy so I started off photographing flowers in our butterfly garden. I was planning on working for only a few minutes and then heading down to the lake to check out the birds. But I wound up staying for more than an hour. By the time I got down to the lake there were few birds and the light was strong, so I headed home early and got in the pool. I’ve been swimming every morning before my first meal.

Gear Questions and Advice

Too many folks attending BAA IPTs and dozens of photographers whom I see in the field and on BPN, are–out of ignorance–using the wrong gear especially when it comes to tripods and more especially, tripod heads… Please know that I am always glad to answer your gear questions via e-mail. Those questions might deal with systems, camera bodies, accessories, and/or lens choices and decisions.

Photo Mechanic Screen Capture for today’s featured image

Lying Down (backwards) on the Job

I wanted to get low to improve the background. Getting on my belly was too low as I wound up with mostly a sky background. So I simply reclined and turned the lens to vertical. The first time that I saw my friend Anita North use the lying down backward technique I thought that she was nuts. Getting the image anywhere near level is a challenge. I do not like having the level active in the Finder as it takes up the center of the screen and is distracting. But after creating so many images on Monday with the horizon badly skewed, I activated the level in the Finder with my a9 ii. The good news is that you can toggle it on and off so that it is available when needed.

The Problems with this Image

  • The horizon is not level.
  • The bush in the background right above the cranes head in the center of the frame wrecks the compositional balance.
  • The Great Egret on top of the bush is a huge distraction.
  • With the subject looking to our left, the bird should be more toward our right in of the frame; in other words, the bird is too centered and there is too much room behind the bird.

But with the elegant pose, I decided to work the image to come up with something pleasing.

This image was created at Indian Lake Estates, FL on Monday 24 AUGUST 2020. I used the handheld Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS lens (at 430mm) and the blazingly fast AF King, the Sony Alpha a9 II Mirrorless Digital camera body. ISO 400: 1/400 sec. at f/8. The exposure was confirmed as perfect by RawDigger. ABW at 8:01am on a clear morning.

Upper Center Zone Continuous AF was active at the moment of exposure and performed to perfection.

The Image Optimization

After converting the RAW file in Capture One Pro 20, I brought the image into Photoshop and leveled it: R for the Ruler Tool and then Command + forward slash for Image > Rotate > Arbitrary. Then I expanded canvas a bit above and left (using the technique detailed in the last blog post here), and cropped the image from below and the right (all to improve the placement of the subject in the frame). Next I needed to move the bush to our right. First I eliminated the Great Egret using the Clone Stamp Tool at zero hardness. Then I created a Quick Mask (Q) of the bush. I made sure to include lots of the sky and the lake to the left so that when I moved the bush to the right hand of the frame with the Move Tool (V), the bush in its original position was covered.

The result was a far more pleasing image design.

Note the crop-a-bility of sharp 9 ii image files. Note also the perfect head angle in relation to the sun as I was working about 30 degrees off sun angle.

Getting Lucky & a Photoshop Content-Aware Crop Tutorial

What’s Up?

After several days of work, I sent a final review copy of the almost-finished RawDigger e-Guide to Patrick Sparkman via Hightail last night.

The forecast is as usual here at ILE today — Tuesday 25 AUGUST 2020: sunny turning cloudy and hot with afternoon thunderstorms. As it has not rained hard here in two days I might try driving on the fields this morning. I will head out at about 7:15am; the days are getting shorter!

Photo Mechanic Screen Capture

The Situation

I was in my new SUV. It was early and it was dark. I had to stay on thread because of all the rain. As the cranes were a good distance away. I do not like to get out of the vehicle when the birds are standing in one spot and preening because they will usually walk away if I do that so I added the 1.4X TC and raised the ISO as needed to get Zebras on the bird’s white chin.

As you can see in the Photo Mechanic screen capture above, there were two main problems with the original:

1- The bird is much too tight in the frame
2- There is a light-toned blade of grass in the background sticking out of the leading edge of the bird’s right wing.

Note the Photo Mechanic histogram. With the image properly mega-Exposed to the Right (m-ETTR), it looks very washed out (as it should be). This is done to minimize noise, maximize image quality, best utilize the dynamic range of your camera’s sensor, and attain the highest possible level of shadow detail in your RAW files in every situation. In addition, your RAW files will contain more tonal information, feature smooth transitions between tones. And your optimized images will feature rich, accurate color. I have really improved my exposures since I began working with RawDigger at the start of the pandemic.

See the optimized version below.

Getting Lucky …

I created seven images as the bird flapped very slowly. The last in the series turned out to be best as the bird had turned slowly toward me. And with Upper Center Zone all of the images were sharp on the eye. And by luck, I did not clip a single wing. I was very lucky that the bird was flapping just slowly enough so that the images were sharp at 1/320 second …

In The SONY e-Guide by Patrick Sparkman and Arthur Morris, there is detailed coverage of which of the amazing Sony AF Area Modes to use and when to use them. This topic is covered in the text and in the galleries where the legendary BAA educational captions will guide you.

Photo Mechanic

Though I now pick my keepers using Capture One Pro 20 and RawDigger, Photo Mechanic still remains an important part of my workflow as it allows me to browse and manage my keepers easily. And it offers easy access to the EXIF that I need to prepare each blog post.

This image was created on Sunday 23 August 2020 at Indian Lake Estates. Working from my SUV, I used the Levered Clamp FlexShooter Pro/Induro/GIT 304L-mounted Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS lens, the Sony FE 1.4x teleconverter, and the blazingly fast AF King, the Sony Alpha a9 II Mirrorless Digital Camera Body. ISO 3200. Exposure determined by Zebras with ISO on the rear dial: 1/320 sec. at f/5.6 in Manual mode. The exposure was confirmed as perfect by RawDigger. ABW at 7:08am with clouds on the eastern horizon.

Upper Center Zone Continuous AF was active at the moment of exposure and performed to perfection. The active focusing point was on our left side of the bird’s lower neck. Click on the image to enjoy a larger version.

Sandhill Crane adult flapping slowly in place

The Image Optimization

After converting the RAW file in Capture One Pro 20, I brought the image into Photoshop and did my basic clean-up work with the Patch Tool, the Spot Healing Brush, and Content-Aware Fill. The next order of business was to expand canvas using the Crop Tool. To do this, begin with the image in the unframed view and hit C for the Crop Tool. Select Original Ratio from the dropdown menu. Make sure that the box for Delete Cropped Pixels is unchecked and that the box for Content-Aware is checked.

Expanding Canvas with Content-Aware Crop

Expanding Canvas with Content-Aware Crop

For this image I needed a bit more room above, below, and right. Now pull the love handles away from the image on the frame-corners or edges as needed. Now click anywhere on the image to activate the Crop Tool. If you have followed the directions properly, it will look exactly as above. Now click on the checkmark or double-click on the image to execute the Content-Aware Crop. It will take a minute or two to fill in the added canvas. At times, you may have to do a bit of clean-up work as some areas of the added canvas may look quite smudged. Do that with the Patch Tool, Content-Aware Fill, or a Quick Mask or two as needed.

Two Gems!

What’s Up?

I spent some quality time with the Mother’s Day colt and its folks this morning, again being sure to stay on the road. I am almost finished with the RawDigger e-Guide.

I was glad to see that almost all of the price-slashed items sold within a day or two including and especially Anita North’s Nikon 600 VR and Dennis Westover’s Nikon D5. I used that combination with the TC-E14 to create today’s featured image. There is a lesson there that I will be sharing with y’all here soon …

Gem #1

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens (with extras)

BAA friend and skilled photographer Dr. Greg Gulbransen is offering a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR lens in like-new condition (with extras) for a very handsome $9296.95. As the lens was only used six times and Greg take great care of his gear, the front element is immaculate as is the entire lens. This one is a gem. The sale includes the original product box, the lens trunk, the strap, the front cover, the rear lens cap, the original lens foot, a RRS LCF-18 Replacement Foot for NIKON AF-S 500mm & 600mm f/4E FL ED VR lenses (a $120.00 value — installed), and insured ground shipping via major courier to lower-48 US addresses only. Your item will not ship until your check clears unless other arrangements are made.

Please contact Greg via e-mail. Photos are available upon request.

In all systems, the 600 f/4 lenses are the weapons of mass destruction when it comes to birds and wildlife. I loved my Nikon 600 both alone and with the 1.4X teleconverter. If you use Nikon gear and have been dreaming of moving up to the big leagues, do get in touch with Greg ASAP to save #3,000.00; this lens sells new for $12,296.95. artie

This image was created (by me) on the morning of February 18, 2018 on the spoonbill boat with the Induro GIT 304L/Mongoose M3.6-mounted Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR lens, the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III, and the Nikon D5 DSLR Camera (Body Only, Dual XQD Slots). ISO 400. Matrix metering +2/3 stop off the blue sky: 1/2500 sec. at f/7.1. AWB at 7:50am on a clear day.

Gem #2

This is my favorite-ever D5 image. If you are looking for a great buy on a Nikon 600 VR, scroll up and grab Greg Gulbransen’s like-new copy with extras …
